The Crane’s 1st Mix Master Competition

Posted in: Events, Food & Beverage, General, News, Packages, Village on: August 18, 2011

It was a LOUD evening in Bar 1887 as the final four pulled out all the stops to see who would become the Crane’s 1st Mix Master. Guests and staff were on hand to enjoy the fierce competition among Peter Lloyd from Carriage House, Orwin Findlay, Carl Henry and Marlon Alleyne from Bar 1887. Each bartender came with his personal bag of tricks and treats and the massive crowd saw a wonderful display of skill and creativity.

First up was veteran bartender, Peter Lloyd and his cocktail “Simplicity”. He was there to prove that some folks like their drinks nice and easy. Next was newcomer Orwin Findlay and his “Love Potion”. Always one to get the party started, Orwin got the crowd involved as he danced, clapped and promised that they would fall in love with his drink. However, it was clear that Carl was the crowd favourite. Drawing on the hype from the recently held Rihanna concert, his mixture was called “The LOUD Cocktail”. He truly drew inspiration from the Bajan beauty with his flair as he ensured that the blend was “shaken not stirred”.  Last but by no means least, was the turn of the baby in the group, Marlon Alleyne and his “Desert Rose”. He was there to educate and entertain the crowd as he muddled fruit to extract the true flavour for his cocktail creation.

The bartenders were judged on accuracy, technique, taste, presentation and adherence to health and safety guidelines. When the scores were tallied, 101 points ensured that Carl Henry walked away with the title of the Crane’s 1st Mix Master. Along with the title, he was awarded a weekend escape for two, inclusive of breakfast and two lunch tours from sponsors Mount Gay Rum. First runner up was Marlon Alleyne. He received a dinner voucher for two. Second runner up Peter Lloyd and third runner up Orwin Findlay both received vouchers from Serenity Spa.

What’s the latest with the Restaurants of The Crane?

Posted in: Food & Beverage, General, News on: January 24, 2011

L’Azure

Last October, Barbados was struck by a tropical storm for the first time in 55 years. Due to the passing of Tropical Storm Tomas our beloved L’Azure sustained some damage and is currently under renovations.  Regular L’Azure restaurant service now operates out of the Pavilion Ballroom which is located next to L’Azure. Completion to the renovations of L’Azure is scheduled to be concluded during 2011.

Zen Restaurant

Things are a little different at Zen, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the excellent food and service.

Diners in Zen Restaurant will be greeted by our hostesses smartly attired in their new chut Thai phra ratcha niyom (Thai dress of royal endorsement). This clothing was designed for use as a national costume in formal occasions.

Promoted by Queen Sirikit and her aides in the 1960’s, there are eight official designs and the pattern displayed by our Zen Staff Thai is Ruean Ton. This is the most casual clothing of all outfits and suitable for non-official functions.

D’Onofrio’s

Lovers of Italian food had lots to savour as Chef Gianni of D’Onofrio’s joined with two of his compatriots for “Three Chefs: An Authentic Taste of Italy” on Saturday, January 15th 2011. This 6 course Gala Dinner officially launched D’Onofrio’s Ristorante Italiano at The Crane. Guest chefs Gianpiero Tondina, who is the President of the Association of Italian Chefs of Canada, and Gino Marchetti, the Association’s Secretary both have years of experience both in Italy and Toronto. These chefs spent a week in Barbados sharing their knowledge with trainees at The Crane and the hospitality training schools in Barbados. They have certainly also been enjoying the sun and our legendary hospitality.

For those in attendance of the Gala Dinner it was agreeable that it was a wonderful culinary experience.

Carriage House

For some time our guests have been asking for a grill menu to be offered at our poolside restaurant, and we have answered this call. From January, we have added a number of grill options to our existing offerings at the Carriage House to the delight of those guests preferring to lounge by our cliff pool complex.

Stay tuned to our blog and our Facebook page for regular updates of what’s happening at The Crane.

Beach Houses at Culpepper

Beach Houses at Culpepper

This brief description of our proposed program at Beach Houses is intended for owners to have the first choice in trading in or purchasing in our newest development at preferential prices. We are planning to launch to the general public in Jan 2011.

We are building an extremely low-density residential resort development. Spread over 50 acres of beautiful sea front land are 65 residences. We will also be developing a small boutique hotel with approximately 40 two-bed residences overlooking the picturesque Skeete’s Bay beach.  All hotel rooms and private residences have private pools and amazing sea views.

The development concept is ultimate privacy, full-unobstructed sea views in a low density, environmentally friendly resort.  Each residence is designed with extremely large private pools and verandas with the “no tan-lines” luxury of privacy, outdoor garden showers, built in owners’ storage and floor to ceiling glass fronts to the sea.  The floor plans are open, spacious and designed to maximize profitability in the rental pool.

We are selling in four-week ownership, quarter shares and full ownership. Owners can split the four weeks into two week blocks by time of year or size of residence.

We are launching with a pre construction fixed pricing with a “lease back” of 4% net, of the new cash invested for the latter of 3 years or completion of the residential unit and a staffed central facilities building.

Trade in of existing residences at The Crane will remain consistent in value for contribution to the rental pool, earning actual returns on the deposited time in the rental pool.  By trading in owners will receive the capital growth achieved from getting into a development on the ground breaking level without the risk associated with all other off plan development.

Your investment is secured by existing Crane inventory and converted to Beach Houses once the residence is handed over to the Trustee, which is estimated to be in three years from ground breaking.

Weekly fees per sq ft are the same as The Crane,we allow full common use of all amenities and services between resorts.  We are planning on running shuttle service between resorts to allow expanded dining experiences and use of all amenities.

Owners accessing usage of Beach Houses value at The Crane during construction can just pay the weekly fees needed to get the amount of Crane Points deposited for the reservation.

Please contact your ownership representative here at The Crane or property@thecrane.com for more information on floor plans, site plans and prices.

The Barbados Jazz Festival in Review

Posted in: General on: February 9, 2010

Four times – still a charm!

For the fourth consecutive year, The Crane has been the official hotel sponsor of the 2010 Barbados Jazz Festival and much like previous years the last was a resounding success. This year’s festival brought stars like Etienne Charles, Joe Lovano, Smokey Robinson, Elio Villafranca, Lalah Hathaway, Bwakore, Lao Tizer, Karen Briggs, Chieli Municci, Robin Thicke, Babyface and Warren Hill to the beautiful shores of Barbados. The Crane had the privilege of hosting the artistes who thoroughly enjoyed their stay on property.  And the festival began…

On Monday night, Bar 1887 came alive as we featured our first After Jazz Lime. Commencing directly after the show at Sunbury Plantation, Etienne Charles and Joe Lovano took to the bar for a second shot at a live performance in Barbados. This upbeat party continued for a few hours as all those in attendance were truly soaking up the atmosphere and the great music.

On Wednesday night, the classical Smokey Robinson delivered a breathtaking performance at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium and continued the show on the road to Bar 1887, The Crane, St. Philip, where his band staged a rocking jam session along with members of the Elio Villafranca quintet.

On Thursday, January 14th, 2010, The Crane was under the limelight as it hosted the dinner set of the festival. Those in attendance opined that the quality of food and show were excellent. This was evident during the After Jazz Lime themed 1887 & All That Jazz as patrons enjoyed the music of Barbados Jazz Artist of the Year, Kellie Cadogan.

On Friday night, Lalah Hathaway continued the tradition of the entertainers of previous nights and rocked the bar with her soulful voice after her performance at Ilaro Court and made way in the Bar for Grammy Award Winner, Robin Thicke the following night. Mr. Thicke performed some of his well known hits such as Lost Without You, The Sweetest Love, amongst others.
