Events

In June 2011, Barbados’ Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison received the prestigious inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage site. For a developing state, this is an extremely commendable accolade and more importantly the addition of these two locations brings the total to only 7 sites amongst CARICOM member states. The official Inscription Ceremony will be held on June 13th, 2012 to commemorate Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Honourable Prime Minister Freundel Stuart will receive the Inscription Ceritificate from Director General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova and will also unveil the official Inscription Plaque.

Tours

Barbados is often described as the home of rum, and distilleries such as Foursquare are a testament to this adage. Foursquare Rum Distillery occupies the site of a former sugar factory that dates back to 1636 and is located approximately 7 minutes drive from The Crane Resort. Besides the distillery, there are several attractions on the property including a sugar machinery museum, folk museum, bottling plants, and a glass fusing studio. Not all are open all the time, but you’re sure to get into the distillery. The distillery was beautifully restored in 1996 combining the historic structure with modern technology, making it one of the most modern in the world. The tour is usually self-guiding and patrons are encouraged to sample the varieties of rum produced by the distillery.

Hikes

The Barbados National Trust conducts hikes throughout Barbados every Sunday of each month. These hikes are lead by qualified hike leaders who are familiar and knowledgeable with the terrain. There are two hikes each Sunday, the afternoon stop and stare is recommended for those who want to walk at a leisurely pace and still be able to take photos along the route. It is estimated that groups cover around 5-6 miles in 3 hours. This is a fantastic way to see Barbados by foot and off the beaten path. It is recommended that all hikers wear comfortable trainers and bring along a bottle of water. For more information, please visit http://hikebarbados.com/schedule.htm

Beaches

The entire south east coast is known for its rugged coastline and spectacular beaches. Harrismith beach is a favourite of both locals and visitors. This beach is fringed by towering coconut trees and features the same soft, white sand this coast is known for. In order to fully experience this paradise you will need to navigate  the formidable steps. There is also a shallow lagoon which is perfect for a low tide dip.
