# The Top Things to do in Barbados
So you’ve planned your getaway to the lovely island of Barbados. You envision white sand, blue water, and endless days of sun. But, how do you plan to fill your days? This country is rich with culture, heritage, and experiences, providing you with a trip that extends far beyond the beach. Here is a list of the top things to do in Barbados. Return relaxed, refreshed, and that much more informed about this tiny island.
Some of the best things about traveling to foreign countries is engaging with the locals and checking out their crafts. Handmade goods are vastly different depending on where you go, and they are some of the most authentic and unique souvenirs you can buy. Barbados has a great shopping village just outside of Bridgetown in St. Michael. [The Pelican Village](http://www.barbados.org/pelican_village.htm#.VVtuHUY4qd4) sells everything from batik to rum cakes to straw figures and pottery. Be sure to check this out and get yourself a locally crafted artisan souvenir from your Barbados travels.
All of the beaches in Barbados are public. This means, if you choose to take a canoe or kayak out on the water and end up miles down the coast, you can get out and explore that beach, no questions asked. For those who prefer land, there are some excellent walking trails you should consider, some that take you through fishing villages and the like. Those who are avid walkers will enjoy the 16 mile walk from the lighthouse at Ragged Point to Pico Tenerife – the views, the peace and quiet, and the sun will have you checking this off as one of your top things to do in Barbados.
Sea creature lovers should find their happy place here. Barbados travel means much more than a tropical beach and a drink. Swimming with turtles is a common activity as the island has a large population of hawksbill and leatherback turtles – those of which are protected on the island. These gentle creatures tend to keep to their routines, making it easier for you to find where they are. While most people return from the Caribbean having swum with dolphins, take a ride with these social sea friends and experience something different.
While the sun will offer you days of happiness, venture underground on your Barbados travel and discover one of the island’s greatest wonders. [Harrison’s Cave](https://chukka.com/destinations/barbados/harrisons-cave/) is deep beneath the surface of the earth and is a stunning crystallized limestone cavern. The cave will have you gazing in wonderment at not only the formations, but the glassy pools of water, cascading waterfalls and towering columns. Your tour options range from a four hour eco tour, a tram ride, and a bat tour for those of you with children.
For those of you who love authentic experiences and enjoy seeing the road less traveled in a new country, one of the top things to do in Barbados is to take a [jeep safari tour](http://www.islandsafari.bb/4-x-4-jeep-tours/island-safari.html). Choose between full and half day tours and zip along the interior landscape of the country. You’ll see the sugar plantations, rum shacks, chattel houses, river forests, remote beaches, and many more exciting sights, all while sipping on rum of course.
