Life slows down in Barbados! No one knows this better than the island's locals, for whom life is an experience meant to be savoured. Take a cue from their smiles and infectious laughter and try our top 5 things to do in Barbados:

1.) Head East
Shun the jet skis and head East to experience Barbados in the way it was meant to be. The place where locals traditionally go to relax, the East Coast is often referred to as the unspoilt side of Barbados, known for its beautifully rugged landscape and uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean. The East is also home to the world-famous Soup Bowl - a mecca for surfing enthusiasts.

2.) Visit A Local Rum Shop
The island home of  the rum that invented rum - Mount Gay, Barbados' association with the spirit dates back centuries.  Scattered across the island, paying homage to this unique history is the Bajan rum shop .This local institution is the social hub of the island where you can buy an ice-cold Banks Beer or a bottle of any spirit (not just rum), choose your favourite mixer and join the lively conversations on politics, sports or even international affairs.

3.) Try A Local Dish
Eating Pudding and Souse on Saturday afternoons in Barbados is practically a national pastime. Available from almost every rum shop on the island, pudding is made by steaming seasoned sweet potato mash, while souse is made from pork pickled with onions, cucumbers, limes and local hot peppers. Delicious!

4.) Oistins Fish Fry
A small fishing village located on Barbados' South Coast, Oistins comes alive on Fridays and Saturday nights. With pulsating beats and a friendly atmosphere, this al fresco fish fry has long been a favourite with locals and visitors alike. Fish is caught daily and served grilled or fried paired with local favourites such as Macaroni Pie and Rice & Peas.

5.) Walk through Historic Speightstown
Speightstown is the most Northerly of Barbados' four major towns. The town centre is characterised by beautifully preserved colonial buildings which are now home to shops, casual cafés and fine dining restaurants while the beachfront board walk is perfect for sundowners.
