Grab your sunscreen and swimsuit and set out on a one-of-a-kind catamaran cruise around the island. Barbados Catamaran Cruises are inclusive of drinks, food and snorkelling (equipment provided), and are a wonderful opportunity to swim with the turtles and see the beautiful and west coastline. Some catamaran companies offer private cruises – great for a small group or a romantic dinner for two.
Often referred to as the unspoilt side, the East Coast of Barbados is known for its beautifully rugged, untouched landscape and uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean. The east coast is also home to the world famous Soup Bowl – a mecca for surfing enthusiasts and home to regular local and international competitions.
Located on the South Coast, Oistins Fishing Village comes alive on Friday and Saturday nights. With pulsating beats and a tourist-friendly atmosphere, this al fresco fish fry has long been a favourite with locals and visitors alike. The fish is caught daily and served grilled or fried alongside Bajan favourites such as macaroni pie, rice & peas or fries and salad.
The warm waters off the coast of Barbados are home to barracuda, swordfish, tuna, and over 500 other species of fish. This makes deep sea fishing one of the more exhilarating experiences on the island. Charter boats berthed in Bridgetown’s Careenage are equipped to handle small groups daily--and catches over 500lbs are not unheard of. Be prepared for an early morning as most charters cast off at 6:00am.
Plantation homes dating back to the 1700s are an integral part of Barbadian history. The faithful restorations are showcased with daily tours of the main plantation houses and beautifully landscaped grounds. It is not unusual to find exquisite antiques and to see the remains of the windmills which were used to pump water and grind sugar.
There are approximately 1,200 rum shops across Barbados, from Enterprise in the South to Crab Hill in the North. Buy an ice-cold Banks beer or a mini bottle (200ml) of any spirit (not just rum). Then choose your favourite mixer and join in on one of the lively conversations on politics, sports, and even international affairs.
Pudding and Souse is traditionally eaten only on Saturdays, and is available from practically every rum shop and restaurant in Barbados. Pudding is made by steaming seasoned sweet potato mash, while Souse is made from pork that’s been pickled with onions, cucumbers, limes and local hot peppers. Delicious!
Speightstown (aka Little Bristol) is the most northerly of Barbados’ four major towns-- approximately 12kms from the town centre. It is characterised by beautifully preserved colonial buildings, which are now home to shops, casual cafés and fine dining restaurants, while the beachfront boardwalk is perfect for sundowners.
Located on picturesque Cherry Tree Hill, St. Nicholas Abbey is a beautifully restored plantation renowned for its stunning Jacobean architecture. Visitors can tour the grounds and purchase exclusive St. Nicholas Abbey Rum, which is distilled and bottled right on the property.
