Ponche Crème

Written by MForde | Dec 10, 2019 2:00:00 PM

“Drink a rum and a punch a crema, drink a rum.
Iz Christmas morning!”

Lyrics heard throughout the Caribbean during December.

Ponche Crème is a thick milk-based drink and is a staple in Caribbean households! It isn’t Christmas without some Ponche Crème.

This delicious (and strong) beverage originated in Trinidad and Venezuela and is very similar to American Eggnog. This is great at home with family but even better to share! Take it to your office Christmas parties or share with friends.

Recipes can be handed down through generations! As our Crane Family, we have shared our easy recipe below!

Recipe

6 Eggs, beaten

2 teaspoons grated lime zest

3 (14 ounce) cans sweetened condensed milk

1 ½ cup rum * We recommend Mount Gay*

1 tablespoon aromatic bitters

1 pinch of freshly grated nutmeg

Method

In a large bowl, beat eggs and lime zest using an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Gradually pour in the condensed milk while continuing to mix, and then pour in the evaporated milk.

Stir in the rum and bitters, and sprinkle with nutmeg. Transfer to a bottle and chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

Best served over crushed ice.

Christmas is a time for friends, family and good food. Whether you are here with us or cozied up in the cold weather, taste the Caribbean in a glass with this punchy Christmas drink.
