You may know Barbados as being a little, sunny island in the Caribbean with friendly people. Here are 5 things that have made Barbados famous over the years.
Rihanna
Rihanna and Barbados are almost synonymous. Rihanna is an international singer, song writer, actress, designer and now the owner of the make-up brand Fenty Beauty, who was born and raised in Barbados. She continues to fly the Barbados flag high in everything she does. In September 2018, Rihanna was named “Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary” for the island.
Sir Garfield Sobers
Sir Garfield Sobers is the only living National Hero of Barbados. He is known as the greatest cricket all-rounder of all time. Playing on the West Indies cricket team from the age of 16, he was a greatly admired and respected batsman, fielder and bowler. Throughout his career, Sir Garfield had many achievements including a new world record in 1958 in his maiden test, scoring 365 runs not out. This record was only broken in 1994. Sir Garfield has gone down in the history books as one of cricket’s finest athletes and has set a high standard for cricketers for generations to come.
Female Prime Minister
The Honourable Mia Mottley is Barbados’ 8th Prime Minister and first female Prime Minister. Her career in politics began in 1991 and she became Prime Minister in 2018, creating history for the island. The Honourable Mia Mottley has proven to be a big inspiration for young women from Barbados, the Caribbean and the world. She has been named as an honoree in EBONY Magazine's POWER 100 list for 2018 - EBONY's POWER 100 list honours "100 Heroes in the Black Community".
Rum
Barbados is the birthplace of rum. Mount Gay Distillery, which was founded in 1703, is known to produce the oldest rum in the world. There are several other distilleries on the island including St. Nicholas Abbey and Foursquare Distilleries. Rum is celebrated in Barbados and is a big part of the island’s culture. There are an estimated 1500 rum shops across the island. Visitors to the island always fall in love with the world’s best rum in Barbados – whether it’s in rum punch or a favourite mix.
Beaches
Barbados is famous for its beaches. Pristine, idyllic beaches which are perfect for lounging and swimming are found on the island’s west and south coast and beaches with conditions suitable for surfing and body boarding are on found on the island’s east coast. There is truly something for everyone!
