Exploring Barbados: Your Guide to Island Transportation

Exploring Barbados: Your Guide to Island Transportation

One of the best ways to discover Barbados is simply by getting out and exploring it.

From colourful fishing villages and bustling boardwalks to hidden coves and seaside rum shops, there is plenty to see beyond the resort, and getting there is all part of the experience.

Whether you choose to hop aboard a bus, flag down a ZR, or set off in your own rental car, you'll quickly discover that transportation in Barbados has its own rhythm. Things may not always run with clockwork precision, but they have a way of getting you where you need to be, often with a good story along the way.

Before you set off, one important note: in Barbados, we drive on the left-hand side of the road.

Public Buses

The blue public buses are a familiar sight across the island, connecting popular areas such as Bridgetown, Speightstown, and Oistins.

They're a comfortable and affordable way to travel, and many are equipped with air conditioning and complimentary Wi-Fi. If you're exploring on a relaxed schedule and would like to see a little more of local life along the way, the bus is a great option.

Just be sure to have the correct fare ready before boarding, as fares are paid into a fare box and change is not provided.

Important to know:

The fare is BBD $3.50 per trip, flat rate regardless of distance.

ZR Vans and Minibuses

These white vans with maroon stripes are a familiar sight across Barbados, particularly along the south and west coasts between Bridgetown, Oistins, and Speightstown. Known as ZRs, they are a fast and lively way to get around, often filled with music, conversation, and a steady flow of passengers joining and leaving along the route.

Unlike the government buses, ZRs operate on a flexible "fill and go" system rather than a fixed timetable. There's no need to find a formal stop. Simply wave one down from the roadside, hop aboard, pass your fare forward, and settle in for the journey.

Alongside ZRs, you'll also see the island's larger yellow minibuses, which serve many of the same routes. With more seating and a slightly roomier layout, they offer a similar convenient and flexible way to travel between Bridgetown, the south coast, west coast, and surrounding communities.

For first-time visitors, the experience can feel a little hectic at first, but that's part of what makes it memorable. Together, ZRs and minibuses are an essential part of everyday transportation in Barbados and offer an authentic glimpse into local life.

Important to know:

ZR vans and minibuses are usually BBD $3.50 per trip and cash is required, so having small change nearby makes things easier.

Rental Cars

If your ideal day involves discovering quiet beaches, scenic viewpoints, and places that aren't necessarily on the main tourist route, a rental car offers the greatest flexibility.

With your own vehicle, you can spend the morning on the rugged east coast, enjoy lunch by the sea, and still be back in time for sunset. Barbados may be small, but there is plenty to uncover when you have the freedom to explore at your own pace.

For guests looking to arrange a rental car, we recommend Go Car Rentals and Stoutes Car Rental, both trusted local providers that can be booked via Concierge, offering a range of vehicles to suit different travel styles and budgets.

 Taxis

Taxis are readily available throughout the island and can be found at hotels, restaurants, beaches, and the airport.

Unlike many destinations, taxis in Barbados do not use meters, so fares are agreed upon before the journey begins.

And while you're travelling from one place to the next, don't be surprised if your driver also shares a favourite lunch spot, a recommendation for the best fish cakes on the island, or a running commentary on the day's events. In Barbados, a taxi ride often comes with a local perspective at no extra charge.

Uber, pickUp, and ride apps

For those who prefer a familiar option, Uber now operates in Barbados, alongside pickUp, a locally developed ride-hailing app.

Many people use both depending on availability and timing. Either option is useful for evenings, busy periods, or when you just want to get from one place to another without thinking too much about logistics.

Which Option Is Right for You?

There is no single best way to get around Barbados. Most visitors use a combination depending on the day.

    • For convenience and comfort: taxis
    • For flexibility: rental cars
    • For local experience: buses and ZR vans

Part of the island’s charm is that transport is not overly structured. Moving around often becomes part of the experience itself, rather than just a means to an end.

Should you require assistance arranging transportation during your stay, our Concierge team will be delighted to assist with transportation arrangements. You may contact the team at concierge@thecrane.com.
